KAY FERGUSON

I wanted to be an artist since I was 4 years old, and drew all the time through my school years.

I graduated from Willamette University in Oregon with a BA in Art. I earned major credits in French enhanced by my Junior year abroad in Aix en Provence, France.

After returning home to Oregon from North Carolina where I resided for five years, I learned how to make stained glass windows and art pieces. When my three older children left home,  I hosted International students who were attending Chemeketa Community College across the street. Between leaded glass commissions and rentals to students I stayed busy, and challenged.  In 1989, I earned a Masters in Teaching (Education) and tried to change careers. My plans didn’t put me into a teaching position, so I returned to leaded stained glass work.

In 1993 I learned to fuse glass to supplement my income. Jocelyn Howells asked me, “Can you make buttons?" and introduced me to button collectors. In 1994 I joined NBS and attended my first convention.

Making buttons for button collectors has been the most satisfying part of my career. It is a group that appreciates my artwork and designs. I added imported paintings on vegetable ivory with a bidri border, vintage and antique buttons to my stock, and sold at the yearly NBS convention for almost 30 years until the pandemic.

I hope you enjoy the limited edition button I made for 2023.
